Science Bodyboards recently announced the signing of one of Australia’s hottest young prospects in 17-year-old Alex Halsey. Alex joins what is arguably one of the strongest youth teams in the world of bodyboarding.
“We have been watching Alex for some time now and we have been very impressed with his ability in the water and also his professionalism out of the water. So when the opportunity came to get him on board the Science Team we jumped at the chance” Said Science brand manager Chris Apps.
Alex who hails from Western Australia has already been gaining plenty of magazine and video coverage being one of the lucky 5 riders that were selected to be part of Movements Future trading Grom Trip and also landing a part in the Claws and Teeth film Pastiche, which premieres around Australia throughout May
“I’m stoked to be riding for science, they have such a great team and a lot of them are good mates of mine so this will definitely help push my surfing, and it is amazing to have mike as a mentor as well it can only be positive for my srufing”. Alex Said

It was actually a good idea to start a real Spongercity Store and we got quite a few orders but we’re almost sold out at the moment and are waiting for new caps, tees and stickers. We’ll keep you posted when everything’s back in stock ! We’ve got new caps models coming that look pretty sick, kinda between a Newera style and Flexfit style cap, with an embroided Spongercity logo on it. Classy !

That’s right, Billabong Ausralia just announced the signing of Jake Stone and Charlie Holt in their boogieboard team. So now it’s Mitch Rawlins + Matt Lackey + Jake Stone + Charlie Holt + Thorpe Walluew (+ Dave Ballard… we reckon…). Good team again and fresh blood. Still sad for Ryan Hardy though.

That’s official, Tom Robinson (ex-science team rider) is now riding for 4PLAY bodyboards! His custom boards are shaped by Reon Fisher in Cronulla, Australia. Here’s some news from Reon and the 4PLAY team riders:
4Play Happenings by Reon “Fish” Fisher
I’ve been pretty busy of late shaping boards and working with our team riders on their new signature models. The range is finally finished and looking incredible…. So I thought I’d take some time out to fill everyone in on some of the weird and wonderful happenings of 4Play over the past few weeks.
First up we have once again collaborated with the Waldron bros for the release of the 4Play Dallas Singer Boom Podcast. Follow the link http://www.vimeo.com/4256235 to check it out, or go to www.waldronbros.com to scope the action from Chad and Kane Waldrons website. The Podcast documents Dallas’s Hawaiian 09’ season starting from my shaping bay in Cronulla and then onto all the North Shore Hawaii action.
Damian King has been busy his next jet ski adventure thru some of Australia’s Southern Coastlines. Keep your eyes peeled for some more big pits from the Kingy.. Also make sure you check out Kings daily blog on
Portmacquarie.iprime.com.au/ there is a classic story up there at the moment of one of his more radical jet ski sessions
The big news I’ve been hanging to announce is our new signing of Thomas Robinson. We are stoked to welcome the Corpse to the team and he has definitely been out there working since coming on. In the last two weeks the lad has done two trips into the South Oz desert and one to the Notorious Shipstern Bluff in Tasmania. Next trip will see Thomas and Dallas team up for a Riptide trip that should see some damn hi-fi tech Bodyboarding go down! Check out the attachment to see Thoms new board models in HPS (Tri-Core), Tech (Polyethelene) & PP (Polypropelene). Make sure you read the Thomas interview regarding the signing in the newest Riptide E-Newsletter. If you aren’t already on the mailing list go to http://riptidemag.com.au/ and sign up.
This season also sees the release of our new Tri-Core. Tri-Core is the next stage in evolution of CCT (Composite Core Technology). Tri-Core is a three layered core with Dow on the top and bottom for the added flex and cushioning while the middle layer is high density foam similar to that of Polypro for rigidity. It’s truly a revolutionary core that I have been testing with the riders for the last six months with nothing but good feedback. I can’t wait for the public to be able to ride this core as it will seriously blow minds.
Besides all that we have our new deck logo for the season to spice things and give the boards a nice clean professional look…
That’s about it from the 4Play Hq… Surf hard and remember 4Play always comes first…

All signs point to yes. As you can see here NMD has already shaped Michael Novy some boards and has already chosen a logo for what we assume will be his upcoming pro model. Let’s hope the shape is sick ! Board and colors combo look sweet from the picture. (Photo © Phil Gallagher)
Design-wise the new NOVY logo is based on shoe brand PONY. The PONY logo being this one. Looks pretty cool on Novy’s board we reckon.

We’ve now completely switched from our version 3.0 to our version 4.0 of Spongercity.com
We re-designed some bits and parts of the site and added some better artwork here and there just to make sure our visitors don’t get lost in the navigation between sections and posts or whatever and still have a neat and clean design to read the latest news and interviews we post. It’s all about ergonomy hey !
Some people have asked us about the design of the site and if we do everything ourselves. Yes we do everything ourselves. And yes we do build or work on other sites as well. We designed spongercity from scratch (started 2003 we reckon), all by ourselves with our little hands a some good coding software. Yes we use the now popular Wordpress platform to store and manage our news posts and pages. It wasnt that popular in the early days but it is now. It’s got a good and flexible structure to work on and you can design really nice sites over its flexible coding architecture. Oh and NO we’re not using a Wordpress already-made design, it wouldn’t be fun ! The site is 100% Spongercity-Designed and Spongercity-Tailor made for our needs. Do we build other sites too ? yes. Mostly HTML/PHP/CSS sites and lots of them with a Wordpress install. Depends what the client needs.
Anyway we hope you enjoy the new version (very little changes if you ask) and we hope you’re using some of our current features:
- The spongercity Podcast
- The spongercity Mac OSX Widget
- The spongercity Store
- The spongercity RSS News Feed
- The spongercity Flickr Galeries
- The spongercity Twitter feed
- The spongercity Newsletter
- The spongercity Facebook page (become a fan get exclusive giveaways soon!)
- Fuck Myspace it sucks now (we have one though, we’re seriously thinking about deleting it now). The Myspace pages, designs and administration panel suck.
