Bodyboarders of the Year – Riptide night on the 5th of Dec.

If you’re in Sydney in December see who’ll be crowned the world’s best, plus catch the Royal Blood premiere!

For last year’s Riptide Bodyboarder of the Year we surprised winner Ben Player at the NMD/Stealth headquarters in Sydney with a bunch of his family and best mates (see the clip here). This year we’re doing it a little different, having paired up with the ABA Tour guys’ Australian Bodyboarding Awards night to present our awards. The date to circle in your calendars is Friday, December 5 (at 6.30pm) and the place to be is the Manly Novotel.

What’ll happen on the night? Riptide will of course be presenting our annual Bodyboarder of the Year awards – celebrating the finest riders and content-makers in the sport (stay tuned for our clips on the Top 5 nominees for each category soon). The ABA will officially crown its 2014 champ, Jake Stone, as well ushering some legends of the sport into the Australian Bodyboarding Hall of Fame. They’ll also reveal some new initiatives and the tour calendar for 2015 and roll out a Michael Jennings-produced documentary of the ABA’s inaugural Aussie Tour year. And then you have the world premiere of Tyge Landa and Bodyboard King’s new film Royal Blood, starring the entire BK team (Ben Player, Jake Stone, Jase Finlay, Ryan Hardy, Jones Russell and Toby Player), which will no doubt be a classic.

The ticket includes drinks and finger food so not only will you get to rub shoulders with some of the world’s best riders and the bodyboarding industry you’ll get to have a beer and an hors d’oeuvre or two with them as well! Tickets are $79 and can be purchased by following this link – http://tinyurl.com/rabas. Tables of 12 are available for corporate partners or large groups of people wanting to sit together and discounts apply. A limited number of tix will be sold at the door, but catering and seating planning means these tickets won’t be assured and will be a bit dearer at $89. Tickets are selling out fast so don’t miss your chance to celebrate the year in bodyboarding that was.

Win a BORN TO BOOGIE book with Spongercity and Orca Publications

Here’s your chance to win a signed by Mike Stewart BORN TO BOOGIE hard cover coffee table book with Spongercity.com and Orca Publications! Thanks Orca for hooking us up with the book and this giveaway!

Wherever you find waves that are too heavy for even the most hardcore of surfers, there you’ll find the boogers – screaming into dredging pits and scoring impossibly deep barrels. Born to Boogie: Legends of Bodyboarding is the first illustrated history of the sport and traces its evolution from 1971 to the present day. The pioneers, the champions and the underground chargers are all profiled, among them Tom Morey, Pat Caldwell, Ben Severson, Jay Reale, Mike Stewart, Michael ‘Eppo’ Eppelstun, Guilherme Tamega, Andre Botha, Ryan Hardy, Damian King, Ben Player, Jeff Hubbard, Mitch Rawlins and Pierre Louis Costes. Written by respected bodyboard journalist Owen Pye, Born to Boogie tells the tale of how the sport was created, how it developed, flourished, faltered and fought back to become one of the most exciting extreme sports in the world today. Filled with incredible stories spanning four decades and packed with iconic images, Born to Boogie is a must-have book for any bodyboarder.

It’s easy to participate. We have one book to giveaway, the winner will be randomly chosen among all the people who will answer the following question correctly:

Q: When Tom Morey developed the modern bodyboard in 1971, he originally wanted to name his prototype The SNAKE (which stood for ‘Side, Navel, Arm, Knee, Elbow’ – the parts of the body you used to ride it). True or False?

You can answer here in the comments below or you can answer on Facebook. You can also email us with your answer if you want or if you don’t have facebook and didn’t manage to answer below in the comments. We will randomly pick up a winner from the people who answered correctly among the correct answers on our website / facebook / email answers. Only 1 winner wins the book. We’ll send the winner the book in a padded package by post mail.

The winner will be announced on the 28th of February 2014 and we’ll send the book to the winner the next day.

SURGE Issue 7.0 is out and it’s siiick!

Surge Media Group is proud to present SurgeBodyboarding.com Version 7.0. – The cover of Version 7.0 features none other than New Jersey’s Chris Schlegel punting a massive invert last winter at home in Jersey, which was devastated by Hurricane Sandy only months earlier. The photograph was taken by a young local photographer by the name of Tyler Bradley.

Version 7.0 is packed with action from the past year stretching across the globe but with emphasis here on home in the United States. We, of course, included our staple action, lifestyle, empty wave, and dropknee galleries as well as our featured full length interviews with dropkneers Kim Feast and Micah McMullin.

Riptide Mag leaves the Morrisson Media Group and gets sold

Riptide Mag leaves the Morrisson Media Group and gets sold to Riptide Designer / Developper Dave Heavyside so it’s still going and is now independent from any media group. Sounds good to us although it’s usually hard for smaller publications to survive without the power / finance of a larger group (moslty because publication rely heavily on advertisers which larger media group can attract more easily). Anyways, read the full story on le BOOGIE magazine’s website for more details about the news.
