Alright, just as we woke up we got 2 emails in the mail box, one says: Science is once again innovating the industry with the release of two revolutionary board covers. The Towel cover and the Ultra Light cover. The Towel cover is a single day use bag that converts into a change mat and towel when fully unzipped and also acts as extra padding when coupled with the Science Tri-Pouch cover. The second is the perfect cover for the traveler, The Ultra Light is made of heavy duty rip stop material and can hold two boards, but the main feature of the cover is that it can fold up to fit into a small backpack pocket. Pictures here: Towel bag pic 1 and pic 2 as well as Ultralight bag pic 1 and pic 2.
The other email from Reon Fisher at 4Play says: Check out 4Play’s new updated site with all the latest news, photos, interviews and products. http://www.4play.com.au Make sure to read the Damian King interview wear his alter ego makes an appearance.
We also noticed that the Manta Boards website had been updated and re-designed too.

Yeah, that’s right, we got the news in our mail box, ROAM II is coming soon ! Chris James, Matt Lackey and Glen Thurston have been busy the last 6 months surfing the best waves Oz has to offer filming the new Nomad film project, ROAM 2. Once again Bryce Thurston is behind the lens capturing the most amazing angles in High Definition, and the crew have many memorable sessions already in the can and the photos to feature in Australia’s 2 premiere bodyboard mags shortly. Joining them in the journey this time around is Adam Luehman, Simon Ormerod, Jake Stone, Michael Novy, Dave Hubbard, Ryan Hard, Nick Ormerod, Dallas Singer, Alex Bunting, Pierre Louis Costes, Amaury Laverhne and Mitch Rawlins. ROAM 2 is proudly supported by Limited Edition Fins and Agent18 Wetsuits.

Talking about Chris James… he’s been handed a wildcard entry into the prestigious Shark Island Challenge! Here’s what Nomad says about fellow team rider Chris “Grizzly” James: Big Griz has built a solid reputation as one of Australia’s leading big wave free surfers and this caps off an extraordinary 12 months for him. Following on from last years breakthrough ROAM project, Chris then spent “40 days travelling around the World”, taking in the Philippines, Ireland, San Diego Wave house, and Mexico. Recently Chris received severe bruising to his ribs and elbow after boosting his large rig at his local and smashing into dry reef, but has bounced back and got his mind set for surfing massive kegs in Victoria last week. Good luck Griz!!
Oh and talking about the Shark Island Challenge, The No.6, the official bodyboard of the Cronulla Shark Island, is proud to announce The No.6 Shark Island Trials begin Friday, signalling the beginning of the Cronulla Shark Island Challenge waiting period at the trials end on Sunday.
This year’s No.6 trials event will not disappoint, with only one Australian (ex-world champ, Ben Player) currently ranked in the Top 16, the rest of the Aussie contingent must battle it out against array of international talent to secure a Wild card into Australia’s most prestigious bodyboarding event. This will make for an explosive event and if your in the Sydney area make sure you get on down to Cronulla to support the best riders in the world.
Coinciding with the event, the No.6 launches on to the Australian market next week: The No.6 range includes some of the most advanced technological breakthroughs in bodyboarding history, including the new Engineered Flex Core (EFC). Variable flex Stringers, Graphic Decks, Graphic Slicks, quad Jaguar channels, padded decks, fantastic new contour deck and concave bottom designs, as well as the new VICE THE BINDS Bicep leash, featuring the patented FLEX Panel for rider comfort which arrives in August. VORTEX (Brian Peterson) has joined forces with Tom Morey on the CATCH SURF project, shaping little soft boards (that look pretty fun though for windy, choppy, and small days !) and VORTEX boards.
CATCH SURF ACQUIRES VORTEX BOARD CO. MANUFACTURING EQUIPMENT AND HIRES BRIAN PETERSON TO LEAD SURFBOARD PRODUCTION
San Clemente, CA – May 12, 2008 – Catch Surfboard Co. (Catch Surf™), makers of Tom Morey’s Surfboards by Y™, has acquired the surfboard manufacturing equipment of Vortex Board Co. (Vortex™). If you’re into riding something different but still wanna be on your belly, then have a look at this:
SCIENCE JOINS FORCES WITH TOM WEGENER FOR THE MS ALAIA MODEL
HELENSVALE, QLD – Science Is proud to announce that it has joined forces with legendary shaper Tom Wegener to produce the MS Alaia model for 2008.
The Alaia model is an authentic replica of the first surf craft, and is also the first fully sustainable environmental bodyboard that has a carbon positive footprint through its growth cycle.
Tom Wegener said, “Each board is hand made by myself or my brother Jon, the sawdust from the boards go into my compost along with newspapers and lawn clippings and ends up as great soil in my garden beds. There is no waste!”
“The board is a complete blast to ride, especially on those smaller days when you might otherwise drive away from the waves. The board generates so much speed even on the smallest of waves”. Mike Stewart said.
There will be only 25 of the Alaia model handmade for the Australian market and each will be signed and numbered by Mike Stewart. They will be available from early July and are a true collectors item that are designed to be enjoyed in the water when they are not hanging on your wall.
Pictures here: Mike holding his new wooden baby, and some kid riding it. Oh and here is one guy doing a 15 feet reverse air with the Alaia board !
Other than that, the Benny Player / Waldron Bros. DVD project seems to get closer and closer with the release of this little teaser on Benny’s website: here’s the link. Can’t wait to watch the DVD !

Toys boards Australia has recruted young dk rider Dylan Lee. Dylan is probably the next big thing since Roach (watch the few waves he’s got in INSERT NAME HERE by the Waldron Bros. and you’ll understand why). We’ve never seen someone his age riding with such a good style and knee control.

Ok, so we’re back in business, and sadly also back from indo where we had a great time. It’s been pretty inspiring to see and ride with the NMD and VS crew in Bali the last couple weeks. I’m sure the Waldron Bros will have insane footage from the crew very very soon.
Anyway, while scanning the world wide web and our email box for tasty news to feed our readers with, we found out that we forgot to talk about a couple new boards enhancement and industry news.
To start with if you’re in oz, make sure you log on Qcdboards.com and check Todd and Jarrod’s new Black Label limited edition stock boards. They look pretty damn good.
Nomad has recently introduced a cool innovation to they boards core, it’s called “Engineered Flex Core”. From what we read it’s basically a core that has 3 flat stringers in it, the stringers being “encased inside the core during its manufacture”. The core seems to be made specifically for bbing, unlike classic PE or PP blanks that are usually not made specifically for bbing but for heaps more industries. Anyway, log on the Nomad site to read more and check the tech graphic to see what we’re talking about.
Last but not least Science is also innovating in 2008 with a new LTD range of boards, including the new Thomas Robinson board and MS1 board, using a special deck material called “Compression Cell” to reduce the impact on landings. Here’s a preview of the MS1 board.
The I AM NONE guys have been busy working on a new movie called THRASH, which should be another great DVD, considering how good VIDEO and ROAM where… Check the THRASH website here and the teaser here.
Grand Flavour just updated they website with a new winter 08 range, which looks cooler than ever. Peep the whole range here on the site.

Science is releasing its new range of wetsuits for 2008, hitting Oz super soon. No details about the suits hitting more countries at the moment but we’ve seen some in the US and Europe in 2007 so the suits will very likely be available “worldwide” soon we reckon. Anyway, they look good and comfy and here’s what came with the press release: 2 fullsuit pictures, 1 spring suit with long sleeve pic, 1 spring suit with short sleeve, and 1 rashie.
oh and a little text came with the press release too:
Science is proud to announce its wetsuit line is about to be released into the Australian market for Winter 08.
Science brand manager Chris Apps said the wetsuits are incredibly comfortable and super warm
“The suits are specifically dialled in for bodyboarding from head to toe, they feature functional design features such as super stretch neoprene, revolutionary ripcord entry system, flex arm grips and hip grips and the suits also have a very competitive price tag”.
Mike Stewart is equally as pleased to see the suits hitting the market in Australia: “I have gone through a lot of wetsuits in my career, some were a little better than others but none were specific for bodyboarding. I am stoked that they are finally hitting the shores of Australia”.
The suits are due to hit major bodyboarding stores at the end of March. The line includes a 3/2 GBS steamer, L/S spring, S/S spring, Neoprene vests and long and short sleeve rash vests.
