Matt Lackey leaves Billabong

We just got an email from Matt Lackey:

“As of today I am no longer riding for Billabong.

After representing the label for 7 years an offer was on the table for 2010 however I have decided to walk away from my relationship with the surfing giant.

Instead I will head in a new direction. This direction is with a new bodyboarding wetsuit label, and this decision will allow me to ride for a company with an artistic and creative vision with a high quality product that I believe will become a benchmark in the industry.

An official announcement on this label will be made in weeks to come”.

Lackey.

Flipmode signs Jones Russell

FLIPMODE is pleased to announce the signing of Port Macquarie local & 2009 Soldiers Beach Pro winner, Jones Russell.

Jones is well known for his positive attitude & technical skills but it’s his big wave riding, featured in “The Joker 2″, which caught everyones attention most recently. His dedication to pushing the limits of his surfing is now well respected.

His plans for 2010 include following the Australian tour as well as competing in some world tour events, starting with the Pipeline Pro. We wish him all the best & are behind him 110%.

Having Jones on the team further strengthens the development of the FLIPMODE brand both locally & internationally. This is another great milestone for us & we look forward to having Jones’ input in the label.

WA boy wonder signs with Pride

Western Australia boy wonder Lewy Finnegan just signed with Pride Bodyboards. He joins one of the hottest young teams in the sport including Cade Sharp, Sam Bennett, Mitch Woodland, Ben Veitch, Nick Perry, Shaun Pyne and Jimmy Williamson. Before departing on another surf trip (try getting hold of him – its a nightmare).

Here’s a little interview with Lewy:

Welcome to the team Lewy. Your signature was pretty hot property over the last few months so why pride?
Thanks mate. I chose Pride because I’ve seen plenty of the boards in EBB as I work there, and I reckon they seem like they’re the best boards. They all have really narrow templates, which I like. Also, the rest of the Pride team motivates me to push myself in bodyboarding because they are some of the best riders in the world.

How have the boards been going?
The boards have been going great! They are the fastest boards I’ve ridden and they perform really well. I currently ride Cade’s model and it’s made it through some heavy surfs without a crease and still rides as if it’s a new board

Being the most Junior member on the team with the likes of Cade Sharp, Sam Bennett, Mitch Woodland Ben Veitch etc….. do you reckon you will subjected to grommet abuse over the next few months with the team’s proposed movie project?
haha… I know I’m in for some grommet abuse being the youngest but as long as everyone is having a good time it’s all worth it!

So what are your plans over the next 12 months? Heard an east coast stint is on the cards?
I’ll be heading over east in June/July to surf with Winchester & hopefully get some good waves. Then heading to Bali with the family just after to get some more waves! I’ll be traveling as much as I can this year to surf waves i have never surfed before. Also going to some of my favourite spots on a regular basis like Margaret River, Rottnest island and Mandurah.

What are your competition goals over the next 12 months?
I hope to make it to nationals and be a finalist in under 18/s and get as far as I can in opens. I’d also like to compete in a few Aussie tour events to improve my competition skills.

Anyone else you feel you need to give a plug to?
Reeflex Wetsuits, Grand Flavour Clothing & EBB

Anything else of interest we should know about you?
My mum reckons I have a few bits of reef left under the skin & in my forehead from a recent accident in Margs. Either that or I’m growing a 3rd eye…

Spencer Skipper joins MANTA

Spencer Skipper joins MANTA ! The rumor was actually true. The LMNOP boat wasn’t floating too good appearently (see Spencer Interview on Movementmag.com a couple weeks ago) and Spencer needed a new sponsor. Good for him, the folks at MANTA are now supporting Spencer. Such a stylish and talented rider couldn’t be left out there with no sponsors. Spencer is seriously one of the most stylish rider ever. Give the guy some $$$ and send him on trips, we wanna see some good riding and stylish moves from Spencer ASAP !!!

Then heading down to Oz for there winter to do some team trips with the boys.”

Reon Fisher Manta’s team manager commented. “It’s cool; Skip has always been one of my favorite riders. He has that really unique style of riding that I don’t think anyone else can really mimic.
