Have clips killed the (full-length) videos ?

Just wondering if vimeo/Youtube clips have kinda killed the full-length videos? (Not necessarily DVDs because full length videos could be released as .avi or .mp4 or fully donwloadable on Vimeo for example). It seems that very few videographers today choose to release full-length videos, it’s almost just short clips now, sponsored by the riders’ sponsors within the 2-3 min. range and that’s it. Most of 20-30 y.o. bbers grew up watching videos/dvds such as No Friends Vids’, The Waldron Vids, Todd Barnes Vids, The Underground Tapes Vids (Chris Stroh), The ROT vids and the list goes on. It was such an epic time to get to watch those vids (tapes or dvds) and they had more than just riding in them, they had their authors’ blueprint, their editing skills and habits, their filming style and feeling, their friends and crew, the riders they’d like to film with and stuff. Don’t get us wrong, clips are awesome and we need them and love to post them twice a week as a ‘video clip dopeness’ post on Spongercity.com but we miss the full length vids ! Damn yeah we miss these ! We were stoked the other day when Josh Garner released a 10 min. clip from Mexico, as you usually get to watch something longer than 3min. these days and dont get to know the riders better, see them riding in different conditions and see more of the editing style. They are still DVDs released out there for sure but less than before. Not sure if it’s the finances that are killing the videos, or the lack of people willing to do a full length movies or the simple fact that everyone realized there’s no money to make on a video…

Anyways, lately we’ve really digged RING of FIRE III (available now on the spongercity store by the way), and there are a couple DVDs that are going to be released soon as well: TALES OF A DREAM by Rob Sherwood, ROAM FREE (Nomad x Matt Lackey), HOME BREW (Zion Crew) and more… thanks guys for keeping the art of the full length video alive !

Jeff HUbbard wins the Zicatela Pro 2012

Zicatela,Thirsday 4th October – Hawaiian Jeff Hubbard has won the IBA TURBO ZICATELA PRO 2012 in flawless 6-8 foot surf at Puerto Escondido today. Hubbard defeated 6x World Champion Guilherme Tamega (BRA) with a high flying air roll and deep barrels in the final to claim his second Zicatela Pro title. Congrats Jeff !

From the IBA press release: The 2 x World Champion fell victim in the non-elimination Round 4 of the event, but taking the longer road to the final did not slow down the hungry Hawaiian. Hubbard took down Australian super talent Mitch Rawlins in Round 6 this morning and managed to keep his momentum, topping Magno Passos (BRA) in the quarterfinals and current World Champion Pierre-Louis Costes in the semifinal.

Guilherme Tamega was looking strong thought the event, defeating an inform Mark McCarthy (ZAF) in the quarterfinal and current ratings leader Dave Winchester (AUS) in the semifinal, but could not match Hubbard’s aerial antics in the final. Today Tamega bagged his third 2nd place finish of 2012, making it clear that he is hungry for a seventh world title.

Winchester’s 3rd place finish has helped him improve on his current points, but with the other three semifinalists also drastically improving on their points, the world title race has heated up between the top four seeds and will be decided at the Encanto World Series in Puerto Rico or possibly the final event of 2012, the Fronton Pro scheduled for 7-16th December in the Canary Islands.

The updated GSS rankings after event 6 of 8 (best 5 results)

2- Guilherme Tamega 7380

3- Pierre Louis Costes 7250

4- Jeff Hubbard 7240

5- Mitch Rawlins 6400

6- Mark McCarthy 6400

13- Alex Uranga 4980

14- Uri Valadao 4820

15- Dave Hubbard 4590

Sacha Specker and Isabela Sousa – New Champs!

South African bodyboarder Sacha Specker is the new 2012 Dropknee world champ! He captured his maiden world title in Playa Paguita, Isla De Margarita, Venezuela a few days ago.

Specker was in a 5 way tussle with several of the planets top exponents including Dave Hubbard (Hawaii) Ardiel Jimenez (canary Isl) Pancho Galdos & Cesar Bauer (Peru) but the cards fell perfectly in order as the contenders fell one by one leaving one man standing.

On the Womens’ side the new world champ is Brazilian bodyboarder Isabela Sousa who captured her second IBA World title in Isla De Margarita, Venezuela as well.

Sousa was competing in the Bodyboard Pro Festival at Playa Praguito, Nueva Esparta, and only had to touch the water to secure enough points to claim the title.

Massive congrats to both of you! Sorry for dropping this news post so late on Spongercity.com we were busy with work and stuff last week and havent had much time to post and congratulate you guys!

Now let’s wait and see what happens in the Mens Prone division for 2012 ! All eyes on Playa Zicatela for the IBA Pro Zicatela ! Check the IBA site for more, the main event is gonna start and the Trials have already taken place with French/Reunion Island ripper Yoan Florantin winning the trials ! Yeah Yoan, way to go!
