DVD Review – THE BEN PLAYER PROJECT

The Ben Player Project filmed and edited by the Waldron Bros. is probably the best movie for 2009… and it’s only early Feb. Yeah, it’s THAT good. If you havent heard of the Ben Player Project yet on this site or any other bbing-related site… then you might have a reading or memory issue. It’s been the most anticipated movie in 2008-2009 (along with THRASH by Todd Barnes) and it delivers just as promised, if not more. Read the rest of the review by clicking the link below.

Spongercity Ben Player Project DVD ReviewThe Waldron Bros. along with Murray Bell fucking nailed the best DVD for 2009. The BEN PLAYER PROJECT is not your average video project, it’s the sickest images, the sickest editing and the sickest quality you can find. The creme de la creme of bodyboarding DVDs.

What’s inside ? Well, bacically is Ben Player, Ben Player and a little bit of Ben Player, surfing the best waves on the planet and showing everyone how to nail 2 world titles (2005 and 2007). The movie shows how Benny proved everyone he was the best competitor on the planet in 2007 after people kinda doubt he really was in 2005. Kinda like – “yeah, you’re the world champ but you’ll never back this one up with a second world title hey” and then Ben does… – “Boom – in your face fuckers”.

There’s only one section that retraces Benny’s history in the sport and there’s very little blabla as the Waldron Bros. told us in their interview, which is cool. All the footage is super recent stuff, no more than 2 years old and only the very best of what Ben has ridden.

Sections include Blackrock, Pipeline, Chili, Bali, Australia, the Canary Islands and a last good mixed up section with different spots. Highlights for us is probably the Blackrock and Pipe sections, but seriously all sections rock and the way they’re introduced and linked with the coolest edits and little skits in between makes it even more enjoyable. It’s just flawless, every single wave is good, and every single piece of title and artwork is stylish. Makes you wanna go surf, slow-mo a shitload of footage, travel, polish your own style, show the DVD to all your buddies, even the ones who dont give a shit: yeah the DVD is just that good and that cool.

Throughout the DVD you will also understand and watch what goes thru Benny’s head as he approched the comps in 2007 and how everything fell into place when he nailed his second worldtitle. There’s very few comp footage which is cool and there’s a subtile and well belanced mix between the contest side of Ben and his free surf side.

The music, we haven’t talked about the music yet. All the music choices are really good, the music fits the editing perfectly and the editing took advantage of the rhythm of each song beautifully. It’s well-choosen, and well done but we wouldn’t say that the music choice is super original. Not that the bands are not original, but the songs are probably not the craziest soundtrack we’ve ever heard. Just our opinion. Anyway the good thing is that you cannot dislike the soundtrack because it’s a really good one with good electro beats, indie/rockn’roll stuff a la iggie pop, pop stuff a la “yeah yeah yeahs”. Our favorite songs are “DLZ” by TV on the Radio and also that cool “Life Aquatic” movie soundtrack song.

You gotta own this DVD. Maybe you had the chance to go to a premiere in Oz and you already own it… if not… buy it from some store or webstore, they just started selling it this week !

Did you actually watch the DVD? Compared to the recently released ROAM II the Ben Player vid is pathetic. I expected a lot more from a guy who is one of the best riders in the world. You think they could have made a decent length vid , its pretty short.

the BP Projet is really different from ROAM II i reckon. I liked ROAM II as well but it’s just really different. BP project is all about benny and the video is actually quite long for a single rider specially if you realise that all the footage is super recent. Can you imagine having a 30 min. sequence in a video just for you and it’s only the freshest and best footage filmed in the last 2 years ? it’s a pretty hard thing to do and i feel like they’ve done it really well. Seriously. I liked that fact that there’s no old footage (except for the quite retrospective at the beginning). Just my opinion though.
Cheers

I couldn’t agree more whith the review, except maybe about one point : what you call “the best waves in the world” are actually quite different from the “oh-my-god” ones in ROAM II, and it is probably the reason why pete C didn’t appreciate the movie. Did you like ROAM II for the massive Lunas and Teahupoo sessions ? Cause the BP Project isn’t all about big waves…
I personnally loved ROAM II cause the big waves charging made the difference and when I went to the movies for the BP Project I knew what to expect, ie not this kind of footages. What makes the difference is the high skills of the rider and the diversity of the moves… you can’t denie that ;)

Anyway very good review T, thanks !

Hey Teo
BP didnt win the 2006 world tittle, it was Jeff Hubbard who did.
BP won in 2005 and 2007.

A lost in translation story
once i was in a bar with ben and he was talking to this girl we were haveing a few drinks and ben came back to the table and said man i really like that girl but im not really getting any where.
So i did the older bloke thing and told him i would take care of it
So went up to her to put the good word in on his behalf in a more paternal way>
Any way it must have been his australian drawl because I started telling her what a great fellow he was and she said hes according to me hes a bloody liar .
Why I asked?
He told me he was a body builder. but look at the guy any one can tell that crap. Look at him he is skinny and under feed!!!
