Board Test – NMD – WINNY WINCHESTER – 41 – 3D CORE – 2012/13

nmd winny 3D 2013 Board Test Been a while since we did some board tests, sorry about that. Our fault, we lagged, had a bunch of boards to test and havent really had time to write down the reviews.

We recently surfed a NMD Winny 3D 41 (2012/13 Model), actually surfed it quite a lot this summer and really liked it. Shape works well in all conditions, template likes fast lines and barrels, trimming down the line and speed. The Winny board is kinda straighter (straighter rails) than the Player NMD board template we reckon. It makes the Player board a bit easier to turn and bottom turn than the Winny board maybe but it’s really probaly just a personal thing. We ended up using the Winny 41 3D most of the time when waves were a bit smaller and a Player 3D 40.5 when waves were heavier. It’s hard to compare boards but this can give you an idea of what we felt when we rode the board and how we felt the template works. The Winny goes fast and is working well for spins and airs. Carves were made easier with the Player template as we said but pure speed and racing down the line were probably made easier with the Winny. So we felt at least…

The Winny 3D core has the sames template as the PE core board we previously surfed and we were stoked to be able to ride the same board but just a bit stiffer. 3D is stiffer, being a sandwich of both PE and PP cores. It takes a bit of time to “break” the core a little bit and get some flex in the 3D core but once you’ve got that flex it’s perfect and lasts longer then classic PE boards. The 3D core seems to be a good mix between the flex of the PE and stiffness of the PP boards and it works in a wide range of conditions and temperatures. Can totally work in colder waters if you’ve used the board a little bit already and have made it flexier, or in Indo waters for example if your board is new and stiff. We’ve tested the 3D core in tropical waters as well as tempered waters and really liked the versatility of the board and its core.

We rode the board in DK a bit but the 41 is a little too small for us for DK (being 5′11 – 1.80m). The board would be better in 42 if you wanna DK more on the board (if you’re the soze size as us of course). We reckon 41 is too small for us to ride DK properly on it. The template will allow you to DK on it for sure (see Winny!) but Winny has a bigger board than a 41. This is not a DK board though, it’s way better for prone.

PE will probably slightly disapear and maybe 3D as well but the 3D and PE should be replaced by lower density PP (Polypro Core) which should be fun to ride. We will definitely test-ride a low density PP core ASAP and write down a little review here as well.

About NMD: NMD boards are made in Indo, at the Broady Factory managed by Nick “Mez” Mesritz (the man behind the NMD Brand), in the same factory that produces brands such as VS, HB, SCIENCE, SNIPER, TOYS, MOREY, BZ, HUBBOARDS and more… They’re all really good boards with a solid construction (Buzz Tech Laminators), CNC Machine precision for the cut of the core blanks, and hand shaped finishing touches for all boards (rails, nose and tail bumpers, nose bulbs & lamination process).

DVD Review – HOME BREW

Spongercity Home Brew DVD ReviewWe got to watch home brew last night, eventually! Super Stoked (Machine) on the DVD! Loved it. Edited by James Kates, filmed by Ryan Mattick and Allan Willson with additionnal titles and artwork by Dav Fox, this DVD is a must have.

The editing is great, punchy, effective and precise, the quality of the images are super good, the angles are original, there are more waves than just nuggans and supers, and the soundtrack is good. What else do you want ?

Oh yeah, the riders, it features Joe Clark, Finlay, Katesy, Putland, T Robinson, Cade Sharp, Sam Bennett, Rigby and more…

The highlights of the video include some remote India perfection, some Blackrock delight, some nuggan stunts, some fun, lots of pleasure and cool titles.

The riders are creative in their ride and having fun and it makes the video breathe and glow. The riding is top notch and the overall feeling you get is that bodyboarding is the coolest thing you can do and it’s damn fun to ride.

Very good DVD to watch before a session to get amped.

Well, that’s it.

Girlies on Boogies

Here’s a cool new website for Girls & Boys, made by Girls with mostly Girls content: http://aswelaybodyboarding.wordpress.com
Yeah girls!

Here’s the “About” section on their website:

We would like to welcome you to As We Lay. As the name suggest As we Lay is about life on the boog.

This is about two of Australia’s top female bodyboarders doing what they love. Emma Cobb and Lauren Frost, want to show you their world. The training , the comps, the Free surfing, the traveling, the adventures and all the times in between. What it actually means to be a female bodyboarder in Australia.

Along the way they will introduce you to the Australian girls and keep you up to date with their lives, you will slowly get to know them, and what they get up to both on and off tour!

Emma and Lauren met in 2003, in they Debut year on the Australasian Tour. Their friendship grew strong and has seen them travel throughout the country and overseas competing both nationally and internationally.

Along the way the posse grew bigger with a mix of the older generation and the up and coming girls. Life long friendships have been built on the simple and pure basis of their love of the ocean.

Life as a female Australian Bodyboarder has never been portrayed in a unique way until now. There has been a strong generalisation amongst Australian womens bodyboarding over the last four years. It is our goal to show you the diversity, beauty and feministic side of the individuals who make up this sport in Australia.

We hope you enjoy this site. Take the time to get to know us. Follow us. Ask us questions. You never know one day you might be traveling along side of us.

Enjoy the Journey.

2013 IBA PIPE CHALLENGE RE-INSTATED

Good news, the IBA Pipeline Challenge is eventually back after being cancelled a couple days ago, and it will be a Full GSS IBA World Tour Event! Super cool!

From the IBA site:
2013 IBA Pipe Challenge Officially Re-Instated to Full GSS IBA World Tour Status

Following on from yesterday’s update, the IBA are pleased to confirm that the 2013 IBA Pipe Challenge has officially been re-instated to full GSS IBA World Tour Status for all 3 divisions.

The last minute sponsorship discussions that took place on the back of the wide spread and positive support of the bodyboarding community, has resulted in a great outcome for the athletes and fans of the IBA World Tour.

The sponsorship support has come from various companies and a full press release will be coming early next week to identify and acknowledge this much appreciated support.

At this stage it can be confirmed with certainty that the Grand Slam Series (GSS) status will be re-instated for the Mens, Womens and Drop Knee Divisions and they will proceed in the original event window of February 16 – March 1. The trials event will commence on February 16 at Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore of Hawaii.

Check in for all riders will be held on the 14th February 2013, with further details to follow in the coming days.

There will be a minimum of 3 full days of professional live streaming of the event.

“Once again, the IBA would like to thank the large and passionate bodyboard community for the positive efforts by the majority of followers to work towards an outcome in light of the situation with the 2013 Pipe Challenge. It is a proud day to be a bodyboarder. We look forward to providing you with further updates in the coming days. See you in Hawaii.

Further updates will be provided Monday afternoon Hawaiian time.”

Alex Leon – IBA World Tour Manager.
