Uri, Eunate, Davo Fever

The SINTRA PRO final day saw Uri Valadao win the mens event, Eunate Aguirre the girls event and Dave Winchester the DK event. With the lack of good waves the show was far from being as good as Puerto a couple weeks before but it’s the way it is and it’s hard to have perfect waves at every locations, specially in europe. Nevermind, the tour is great, the organization, the live webcast, the comments and everything is seriously as good as it gets and we can once again thanks the IBA and all the people involved ! Seriously amazing !

PS: Appart from Manny who has the right (yes we think he does coz he’s rad) to wear a San Diego cap, all other commentators should wear one of the sponsors hat and one of the sponsors tshirt or the contest tshirt we reckon. That’s the only non-professionnal move we’ve seen during the contest… Seriously, with bodyboarding struggling to find sponsors and investors, wearing a skateboard company cap or anything else non-related to bodyboarding and/or the event sends a really bad message to everyone watching and is probably pissing off sponsors and maybe aspiring sponsors… (our 2 cents…) We’re telling the kids everyday to support the industry and those who support us so… please do so, specially if you’re commenting in the IBA booth or appearing anywhere on TV.

IBA SINTRA PRO starting today

Sintra Portugal Pro – Event 5 of 8, Mens Grand Slam Series is starting today (Waiting period: 22-28 Aug 2011)

Praia Grande, Sintra, Portugal (Sunday, Aug 21, 2011) – The Sintra Portugal Pro is event 5 of 8 on this years Mens GSS, marking the start to the second semester of the 2011 World Title race. Never before has the field of competitors vying for a World Title been as internationally diverse throughout the Mens GSS, Women’s GSS and DKWT seedings. Being the longest running event on the calendar and contributing 2000 points towards the Mens and Women’s GSS Tours as well as a 1000 points for the DKWT, makes Sintra a highly anticipated event, bringing together all divisions and nationalities of the sport.

With 2 to 3 days of trials ahead, the Top 24 will be watching and preparing for their GSS heats later in the week, where they will meet the 2 Wildcards and 4 successful trialists in the first round of the leaderboard phase.

Visit the IBA website for all updates and live action of the main event.

Jeff Hubbard, victorious at the IBA ZICATELA PRO 2011 !

Jeff just won the 2011 IBA ZICATELA PRO ! Yeah Jeff ! Ryan Hardy takes second place with a great performance and much style and talent. Mitch Rawlins and Pierre-Louis Costes finish equal third with also great performances for both of ‘em.

Incredible comp once again, absolutely perfect LIVE webcast from the IBA/RedBull crew and awesome comments from Manny Vargas. Seriously, it can’t get any better than this, it’s THE best webcast in the boardsport industry now, it’s smoking everything we’ve seen before. THANK YOU SO MUCH IBA for bringing this to bodyboarding, congrats for all the hard work, organisation and everything. It’s the best world tour we can remember of, seriously. We bet all our readers think the same and we bet the sponsors and riders are stoked.

There’s only one weird thing for this event: usually it’s board Brands who sponsor events (and it was kinda the case here for the contest) but not the manufacturer itself. What’s the point (of course the IBA needs money but it’s kinda weird the have the factory itself sponsoring the event). Just our 2 cents…

See ya at the Sintra Pro soon !

IBA TOUR – ZICATELA PRO – Puerto Escondido

The Zicatela Pro in Puerto Escondido, Mexico just started with 2 consecutive days of trials. It’s the 4th stop on the world tour on a total of 8 stops. Don’t miss the event and watch / follow it LIVE on the IBA site and Redbull.com

PUERTO ESCONDIDO, Oaxaca / Mexico (Wednesday, Aug 5, 2011) – With Day 2 of the trials complete, the field of competitors vying for the 8 slots available in the Grand Slam main event has been withered down to the top 32. The groomed offshore and crystal blue water made for excellent conditions as solid 2 meter barrels reeled across the sandbars of Puerto Escondido. Standout performances included Fabio Rodriguez (BRA), Babby Quinones (PR) and Jorge Colomer (PR). The remaining quarter finalists need to advance into the semifinals to secure their place amongst the elite top 24 in the 2011 AGIT/Turbo Zicatela Pro Grand Slam.

Winny wins at the Island

Dave Winchester wins the 2011 Shark Island Challenge ! Check the IBA site for more news and pics / vis of the event.

Final:

Dave Winchester (NSW) 15.70
Andrew Lester (NSW) 13.73
Mike Stewart (HAWAII) 6.94
Ben Player (NSW) 3.67

Tamega wins the ARICA Challenge

South American powerhouse, Guilherme Tamega (BRA, Copacabana) has defeated Dave Winchester (AUS, NSW, Mullumbimby) 16.00 pints VS 13.00 points, to take out stop No. 3 on the 2011 IBA World Grand Slam Series (GSS), the Arica Chilean Challenge.

The win, accompanied by 2000 GSS points was no easy feat. In building 3-4 meter swell, Tamega gained momentum on his fellow competitors, navigating through monstrous barrels and launching huge rolls over the notorious El Gringo reef, covered only by inches of water.

After being carried onto the podium by his fellow countrymen, Tamega covered up the tears as he thanked his family and friends for their support, contributing to this memorable win. “This is like a dream come true. I really needed this win to get my motivation going and show me that 2011 is not over,” said Tamega.

With a half a dozen World Titles and runner-up finishes alike, Tamega will be a strong contender for the 2011 World Title.

Winchester was the man to beat, until reaching the final where he was unable to find the waves he needed. Winchester commented: “Every heat I was getting a bit more confident. I just got into a bad rhythm in that final and I could not get out of it, so I got second. I’m pretty happy with that.”

With equal third place finishes, both Ben Player (AUS, NSW, Avalon) and Mark McCarthy (RSA, Richards Bay) walk away with 2400 points and $ 2500 each.

Player was in good form throughout the event, but was unable to match Winchester’s semi final performance. Player commented: “I could not buy a wave out there and Winny is an excellent competitor. In my eyes he is Top 5 in the world, so I’m happy losing to him.”

McCarthy was happy with his result, considering the conditions and risks involved during this event. “Tamega wanted it so bad, he is so hard to beat when its big and crazy like today. He deserved to win today.”
McCarthy’s performance has solidified his 3rd place on the GSS rankings, making him a title contender as the tour approaches the half-way mark at the Zicatela Pro in Puerto Escondido, Mexico from August 4-13.

Alan Munoz (CHI) stunned the bodyboarding world with his stellar performances and local wave knowledge. As a trialist, Munoz gained confidence with each heat, until running out of steam in Round 4. “I am happy to have competed at this level, but sad I did not make it further. I now am looking for a sponsor so I can go to the next event in Mexico.
