EBB Pro Contest in west Oz – (Thurs 16th – Sunday 19th September 2010)

WA riders check this out:

IBA Australasia Rebel Sports Pro Tour Event # 5, The EBB Pro.

Yallingup, South-West WA. Event waiting period (Thurs 16th – Sunday 19th September 2010)

The EBB Pro Proudly Supported by Elit’ Bodyboards, SunSmart, and Surfing Western Australia.

The Australasian Rebel Sport Bodyboard Pro Tour is heading west for what is anticipated to be the biggest bodyboarding event the state has ever seen. The 2010 EBB Pro is returning to Yallingup in the South-West corner of WA for a four day competition, which will combine the final event of the WA State Bodyboard Series.

The EBB Pro is the fifth stop of the Australasian Bodyboarding Pro Tour which has thus far travelled to New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia . The event will see a bumper field of up to fifty professional bodyboarders from across WA, East Coast Australia and even South Africa travel to the beautiful Cape Naturaliste area in Yallingup for what is shaping up to be a simply electrifying four days of action.

The EBB Pro is proudly celebrating its fifth birthday and after a slow start in the opening years with the event running in the metro beach breaks of Perth, the event has broken free of those shackles and is now a permanent fixture on the IBA Australasian events calendar. Since its humble beginnings the EBB Pro now boasts a four day waiting period in one of the countries most surf rich locations, along with this the 2010 EBB Pro is proud to carry a massive four star rating and a total prize pool of $5, 000.

The EBB Pro is lucky to be run in one of the most iconic surf locations in the world, and with a total of six possible locations booked the riders should benefit with officials only running the Pro divisions in the best waves and conditions possible.

“Its important for the competitors to have simply the best waves on offer, it’s a long way to come to WA to only surf a dribbly beachies so we’re happy to have to ability to move the event to some of Yallingup’s biggest and thickest waves.” Said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks.

The EBB Pro has provided a huge opportunity for WA’s up and coming bodyboarders to see their idols first hand and continue the sports development into the future. WA has long been renowned as a breeding ground of unbelievable bodyboard talent, and with the likes of Ryan Hardy, Sean Virtue, Brad Hughes, Chad Jackson and Chris White all at the forefront of the pushing the sport into the mainstream.

Combining the Pro event with the State Bodyboard Series provides an opportunity for the next generation of talent to see the stars of the sport with their own two eyes. For the likes of Alex Halsey (Woodvale), Lewy Finnegan (Ocean Reef), and Mandurah duo Davis Blackwell and George Humphrys the opportunity to see professional bodyboard action live, has resulted in some impressive performances from the ‘new school’ of WA bodyboarding.

The EBB Pro has always been a crucial event on the Aussie Tour, with many winners of the event going on to claim the Rebel Sport Australasian Pro Championship. Such was the case with defending Champion Corey Maclean (Miami Beach, QLD) who went from strength to strength after his inspiring win in the west in 2009.

Maclean will be leading the list of defending champions returning to WA, along with 2008 winner Michael Novy (Avoca, NSW) in an attempt to become the first rider in the events history to claim back to back titles. The EBB Pro has been lucky to secure a window with no clashes amid World Tour Events in Europe so event officials are hopeful for more big names signing up for the event in the next few days.

“Each year we have drawn some of the world’s best bodyboarders to the event including Dave Winchester, Ryan Hardy, Brad Hughes, Chad Jackson, Tom Rigby and Jake Stone. I think the quality of the field is testament to the event and also the great waves that the South-West can produce”, said Justin Majeks.

Entries are still open with positions available and will close on Wednesday September 15th. Competitors can still enter online via the Surfing WA website http://www.surfingaustralia.com/wa/event.php?id=183

Newcastles Rob Richards takes out the 2010 DKS Sundowner Tiona contest

DKS Sundowner Tiona 2010 – presented by Turbo and Bluntcut Fins

Recap from the TIONA Comp from the cool cats at DKS:

Newcastles Rob Richards has emerged out of nowhere to take out the 2010 DKS Sundowner Tiona contest infront of Central Coast’s Grant Molony. South Boomerang Beach was the venue with some classy 3ft waves all day which seen some of the world’s best DK riders battle it out.

“We decided to try a different format this year running the 2 first rounds as 4 man heats and then it was man-on-man format from there on in right to the final” organiser Clayton Pickworth said. “It gave the riders more of an opportunity in the water to prove what they can do and showcase their skills” he said. “Rob surfed consistantly all day after a shakey first round heat but he cut loose with some awesome tail snaps and big floaters which impressed the crowd”. Grant Molony was left without a solid wave in the final which Richards had control of from the first 10 minutes with some great moves off the right handers.

In the 3rd and 4th place surf off, Central Coast’s Mat Klimowicz was victorious over Victorian rider Justin Welsh who rounded out the top 4 places. Organiser Clayton Pickworth couldn’t have been more happy with how the contest went, “Mate i’m stoked that we get the best riders here every year regardless of what else is going on around the world and it showed this weekend with another new name becoming a winner here at DKS”. “These contests are doing what it set out to and that’s creating opportunity for exposure for any DK rider from any region and Rob has certainly stepped up to the plate and beat some of the best on his way”.

This weekend will see the second DKS event take place in Port Macquarie at the best break on the day. You can catch all the action on the DKS website www.dksessions.com and follow the links.
