Here’s a cool new website for Girls & Boys, made by Girls with mostly Girls content: http://aswelaybodyboarding.wordpress.com
Yeah girls!
Here’s the “About” section on their website:
We would like to welcome you to As We Lay. As the name suggest As we Lay is about life on the boog.
This is about two of Australia’s top female bodyboarders doing what they love. Emma Cobb and Lauren Frost, want to show you their world. The training , the comps, the Free surfing, the traveling, the adventures and all the times in between. What it actually means to be a female bodyboarder in Australia.
Along the way they will introduce you to the Australian girls and keep you up to date with their lives, you will slowly get to know them, and what they get up to both on and off tour!
Emma and Lauren met in 2003, in they Debut year on the Australasian Tour. Their friendship grew strong and has seen them travel throughout the country and overseas competing both nationally and internationally.
Along the way the posse grew bigger with a mix of the older generation and the up and coming girls. Life long friendships have been built on the simple and pure basis of their love of the ocean.
Life as a female Australian Bodyboarder has never been portrayed in a unique way until now. There has been a strong generalisation amongst Australian womens bodyboarding over the last four years. It is our goal to show you the diversity, beauty and feministic side of the individuals who make up this sport in Australia.
We hope you enjoy this site. Take the time to get to know us. Follow us. Ask us questions. You never know one day you might be traveling along side of us.
Enjoy the Journey.

Good news, the IBA Pipeline Challenge is eventually back after being cancelled a couple days ago, and it will be a Full GSS IBA World Tour Event! Super cool!
From the IBA site:
2013 IBA Pipe Challenge Officially Re-Instated to Full GSS IBA World Tour Status
Following on from yesterday’s update, the IBA are pleased to confirm that the 2013 IBA Pipe Challenge has officially been re-instated to full GSS IBA World Tour Status for all 3 divisions.
The last minute sponsorship discussions that took place on the back of the wide spread and positive support of the bodyboarding community, has resulted in a great outcome for the athletes and fans of the IBA World Tour.
The sponsorship support has come from various companies and a full press release will be coming early next week to identify and acknowledge this much appreciated support.
At this stage it can be confirmed with certainty that the Grand Slam Series (GSS) status will be re-instated for the Mens, Womens and Drop Knee Divisions and they will proceed in the original event window of February 16 – March 1. The trials event will commence on February 16 at Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore of Hawaii.
Check in for all riders will be held on the 14th February 2013, with further details to follow in the coming days.
There will be a minimum of 3 full days of professional live streaming of the event.
“Once again, the IBA would like to thank the large and passionate bodyboard community for the positive efforts by the majority of followers to work towards an outcome in light of the situation with the 2013 Pipe Challenge. It is a proud day to be a bodyboarder. We look forward to providing you with further updates in the coming days. See you in Hawaii.
Further updates will be provided Monday afternoon Hawaiian time.”

Crappy day and probly’ crappy year for the IBA – IBA 2013 PIPE CHALLENGE CANCELLED !
http://ibaworldtour.com/2013/01/iba-2013-pipe-challenge-cancelled/
This is seriously catastrophic for the IBA 2013 tour as Pipeline is obviously the one and only wave that NEEDS to be surfed on the world tour, its the shiz niz of waves, the one and only banzai pipeline. IBA stated it’s a lack of support from the industry and sponsors that forced them to cancel the event. If only one contest was to be kept alive on the tour it’s Pipeline! Why not push the event to the end of the 2013 calendar and save time to try to find more sponsors and keep the event alive?
From the IBA site this morning:
It is with great disappointment that the IBA announce the cancellation of the 2013 Pipe Challenge in Hawaii that was scheduled for February 2013.
The 2013 Pipe Challenge has been forced to be cancelled as a result of the complete lack of industry sponsorship for the event.
The IBA had been in sponsorship discussions with industry companies and out of industry companies for a period of over 6 months. There were a number of positive leads that have fallen away over December and January for various reasons, the most recent being this week. All options have been explored to continue with the running of the event, though the decision taken to cancel the 2013 IBA Pipe Challenge.
“The industry needs to support the IBA World Tour to ensure growth and prosperity for this sport. It’s a sad day for the IBA, its athletes and supporters.” – IBA World Tour Manager, Alex Leon
The Men’s and Women’s 2013 IBA World Tour is now scheduled to commence in Australia in April 2013, with further details to be confirmed in the coming weeks. The DK World Tour kicks off in Peru in March 2013.

These might be useful tips if you’re looking for a sponsor or already have one or several but don’t want to get screwed in your career:
- For up & coming riders: Gather a bunch of good pics & videos of you as a portfolio to show when seeking for a sponsor
- For up & coming riders and already-sponsored riders: Make sure you edit the video well or ask a friend to edit it well for you, it’s important to show something nice to potential sponsors
- For up & coming riders and already-sponsored riders: If you send emails make sure you dont do mistakes, it’s important to show you can write and express yourself well
- For up & coming riders and already-sponsored riders: ALWAYS ask for a contract and if it’s only flow-team stuff and free gear ask the compnay how long the deal is for and how many free products you get a year. Even if it’s just a couple boards or accessories it’s important to ask the company to write it down in a contract or at least in an email so that you know what you have and where you’re going. No contract or no written deal = nothing
- For already-sponsored riders: If you have a sponsor(s) ask for their HD logo and use it in video edits or photos, also ask your sponsor if they can pay for the video editing if you ask a good videographer to edit the video. Better ask your sponsor to pay and have a nice clip than try to do somehting half-ass
- For already-sponsored riders: If there’s money involved please read above point once again! Ask for a contract even if it’s a 100 dollars contract.
- For already-sponsored riders: If you have a board sponsor and a contract check if there is an article in the contract that forces you to ride their boards and also their accessories. If there is, then ask exactly what that means and if you get extra money or extra advantages by agreeing to ride their accessories. If you’re not happy with this ask for a modification before signing. If you’re accepting the terms of the contract as they are make sure the deal suits you! Why? Because by accepting to sign a contract that forces you to ride boards + accessories or wetsuits you simply miss the opportunity to get 2 or more sponsors instead of 1 and you miss the opportunity to get more products and potentially more money from a second or third sponsor. Also keep in mind that having several sponsors might be better to multiply your chances to get recognition, additional sponsors (clothing or sunglasses or whatever), additional money and coverage on the web or mags because the brand will use shots of you for ads and promo and having more sponsors means more ads and recognition.
- For already-sponsored riders: Does your sponsor have a website ? Do you appear on the website ? If not, then why ? It’s important to be part of a team and be well identified and promoted on their website.
- For already-sponsored riders: Ask your sponsor if they can buy some pictures of you when a photographer has some good shots of you or at least put the photographer and the brand in contact to see if they can deal something.
- For already-sponsored riders: Be smart, most board companies are managed by distributors, they want to sponsor you for boards, accessories and wetsuits to get you all set up with their own stuff and no one else’s stuff and they’re not necessarily your friend, they need you but they don’t want to spend too much money on you unless they are good honest blokes or good friends of yours. Choose what you want to do, tell them what you need, what you’d like and how you see things, dont be shy and let yourself get driven. You’re not risking anything if you ask your sponsor or the distributor who’s sponsoring you for more details in the contract, for modifications or whatever. The brands need you if you surf good and most of the time you’re only getting free stuff from them (no money) and you have a job or you’re still at school or doing studies so you’re not risking anything if you’re picky and know what you want.
Note: Independent brands might be easier to deal with and to target if you’re looking for a sponsor or for sponsors deal because you’ll be dealing with several brands and not just a group of brands belonging to a distributor and you can wisely choose your sponsors or leave one and keep the other when things are not going your way. Most of the time clothing sponsors are independent from distributors (for example I am None, Grand Flavour, Unite, Flipmode are independent brands), some wetsuits sponsors also are independent (Z I O N, Reeflex for example) but not all of them, some boards companies are independent too but very few (QCD, Toobs for example), some accessories or fins sponsors are also independent but few… Always know who you’re talking to and keep in mind all of the above tips…
