Is Michael Novy riding for NMD ?

Yes, probably since he’s got an NMD board under his arm as we speak in his Pipeline Turbo Pro heat today. Sponsor change from LMNOP to NMD… We’ll wait for the press release to confirm but it definitely looks like Novy got himself a new sponsor here !

Link of the week

www.bodyboardersjournal.com that is.

Our friend Michael Emo has been working on this baby for quite a while now and he just officially launched it yesterday. Check it out and help Mike gather some more info if you can.

Here’s what BBers’ Journal is all about:

We aim to bring together and preserve the stories, projects, people and events of the last 37+ years that have ultimately defined and shaped our sport.

We’ve gathered content and information on bodyboarding from every corner of the globe. Countless videos, magazines, stories, profiles, articles, interviews and images from the past and present have crossed our desktops, blurring our eyes and overloading our brains well past midnight. And along with the help of a few generous bodyboarding souls, young and old, we have arrived.

More than 400 video titles and 200 issues of various bodyboarding magazines have been indexed to date. We’re also working on individual and company profiles, interviews, stories and much more! In fact, we’re working to preserve the entire history of bodyboarding and this is just the beginning. So sit back, saturate your mind and enjoy.

Max Arent now rides for Sen No Sen Wetsuits

Aussie ripper Max Arent now rides for Euro label Sen No Sen Wetsuits. This probably means the brand is expanding its territory to Oz very soon. French rider Mat Desaphie has been developping Sen No Sen Clothing for quite a while now (1999) and is also the man behind MILK Bodyboards for your info. SNS Wetsuits are coming for 2009 with sick colors and cuts. FYI Max still rides for Plastic People Clothing. Only SNS suits.

Pipeline trials decided… and LMNOP dkpro invitational list

The trials for the Turbo Bodyboards Pipeline Pro are going to be staged at Erma’s near Sandy Beach. Too bad. We wish it could have taken place at Pipeline.

The list of riders for the LMNOP DKPRO Pipeline invitatinonal is now available on the IBA site as well: Check here.

DVD Review – THRASH

THRASH by Todd Barnes… The good thing with a Todd Barnes movie is that you know it’s gonna be good. After VIDEO (Todd’s previous DVD which we reviewed here), NF10 (which was edited by Todd) and ROAM (Todd editing as well) is seems that everything Todd films and edits turns into a sick film. THRASH is no exception and it’s definitely one of the best DVD in 2009 along with the BEN PLAYER PROJECT and ROAM II.

A quick Mason Rose report from Hawaii today

We just caught up with Mason Rose today and asked him what’s up on the rock. Mason’s been there for a month or so and wrote a little report for us to share with you guys. Also check the photo gallery below the report.

Spongercity: Hey Mason, howdy ? What’s up in Hawaii ? Any cool stories ? what you’ve been doing ? weather, waves, sessions, nights ? Your thoughts on the pipe comp ?

Mason: Aite you aliens who be one dimensional on the island of Oahu i wanna share my thoughts on island styles.

Surf, eat, cruise, surf, eat, cruise, party and sleep then do it again, basically this is how it is on the island of Oahu Hawaii but everyone has their version, there experience, their story – this is mine.

Have been here in Hawaii for a month, well this is my 14th time, I have local people i call family, i roll with my crew and i respect the place to the fullest, one day i’d like to live here and make it my home.

A lot of people just stay on the north shore and camp out because they’re forced to but for me i just roam from one side of the island to the next chasing the swell only the locals know about and for me I’m blessed to have that opportunity and i make the most of it…

My daily routine always starts and ends with a wave check and swell forecast so i know where i need to be and then jump in the car and go get some.

I’m also juggling an event (shadow wars), work back home(creative arts director for a company) on top of trying to get waves and coverage for my sponsors www.turbosurfdesigns.com

About the pipe comp, Kainoa McGee is my boy, and he has done alot for the sport, you could say he is our backbone but this year we forgot this and we didn’t hold a spot for him in the pipe comp and maybe it was a miss understanding, a mistake to say the least, i know he is pissed but i hope he recoils and does enter cause i know since then he has been offered a top seed in the comp and entry waivers etc…but other than that the comp will be killah…it always is but i feel this year it has a better structure and grounding to it…the riders are dope and i can’t wait to see the crazy moves!

I got to get out of here and go surf but check some of the pics from my trip…surf, parties and good times! THIS IS HOW I ROLL IN HAWAII!

PEACE
M

DVD Review – THE BEN PLAYER PROJECT

The Ben Player Project filmed and edited by the Waldron Bros. is probably the best movie for 2009… and it’s only early Feb. Yeah, it’s THAT good. If you havent heard of the Ben Player Project yet on this site or any other bbing-related site… then you might have a reading or memory issue. It’s been the most anticipated movie in 2008-2009 (along with THRASH by Todd Barnes) and it delivers just as promised, if not more. Read the rest of the review by clicking the link below.

Ryan Hardy now rides for UNITE CLothing Company

Some people might have noticed some new stickers on Ryan’s boards recently ? Well.. Ryan just signed with UNITE Clothing Company. The news has just been released on thr UNITE website. This is fuckin good news for both Ryan, UNITE and the bodyboard industry in general. Ryan had been dropped by Billabong a couple month ago and was looking for new sponsors, now UNITE has one of the sickest team in the industry and it shows that bodyboarding companies can actually make it, afford to sponsor hi-profiled riders, and strenghtening their brand and the industry in general in the process.

Pro surfer Jamie O’Brien scores a seed in IBA grand slam event at pipe

wtf ?! Pro surfer Jamie O’Brien scores a seed in IBA grand slam event at pipe. This is what we just read on the IBA website.

Sounds weird. Sounds good but surprising… we’re not sure what to think about this one. Is this a desperate attempt to get more media coverage during the pipe comp ? or is this a cool way to try to bridge the gap between bbers and surfers ? Jamie O knows how to surf pipe better then anyone and will definitely get barrelled there on a boogieboard but why chose Jamie O for this seed instead of some hi-profile bber ? Will Jamie O prove that bbing is way easier then stand up surfing ? or will bbers prove that bbing is just as technical and hard as standup surfing if Jamie doesnt make it thru his heat ? It’s really hard to tell but we’ll wait and see. Exciting stuff… but very surprising.

Here’s the press release from the IBA about this:

In one of the most extraordinary twists in modern Pro surfing, Pipeline local Jamie O’Brien has been granted a start in the seeded rounds of the Turbo Bodyboards Pipeline Pro.

This is the first event on the International Bodyboarding Association Men’s World Tour for 2009 and carries a Grand Slam status as well as double points towards the championship.

International General Manager of the IBA Terry McKenna says that O’Brien started his surfing career on a bodyboard as a kid before making the transition to fibreglass.

“Apparently Jamie was into it when he was younger and still feels keen enough about it to have a start in the event. Word on the street is that he can still hold his rail in and ride deep in the barrel at Pipe, so it will be amazing to watch ” said McKenna.

“Jamie is one of the most innovative surfers in the world and an astounding waterman so I would not put it past him to blow some minds at his home break.”

“I can only imagine that this will be one of the most highly anticipated heats of the year and watched by everyone in the surfing community. It’s a bold move and a first for the IBA ” said McKenna.

Jamie O’Brien had a different sort of sandpit to play in as a child. His backyard was Pipeline and no one knows this break better than him. This is supported by the fact that he was the youngest surfer to ever win the Pipeline Masters ASP event and recently won the backdoor shootout.

O’Brien will be seeded into the rounds 33-80 in a field of 144.

The waiting period begins on Feb 17th and continues till Feb 27th with the best three days being used for competition.

The event is being webcast at www.ibaworldtour.com/live More info www.ibaworldtour.com
