Tamega wins the ARICA Challenge

South American powerhouse, Guilherme Tamega (BRA, Copacabana) has defeated Dave Winchester (AUS, NSW, Mullumbimby) 16.00 pints VS 13.00 points, to take out stop No. 3 on the 2011 IBA World Grand Slam Series (GSS), the Arica Chilean Challenge.

The win, accompanied by 2000 GSS points was no easy feat. In building 3-4 meter swell, Tamega gained momentum on his fellow competitors, navigating through monstrous barrels and launching huge rolls over the notorious El Gringo reef, covered only by inches of water.

After being carried onto the podium by his fellow countrymen, Tamega covered up the tears as he thanked his family and friends for their support, contributing to this memorable win. “This is like a dream come true. I really needed this win to get my motivation going and show me that 2011 is not over,” said Tamega.

With a half a dozen World Titles and runner-up finishes alike, Tamega will be a strong contender for the 2011 World Title.

Winchester was the man to beat, until reaching the final where he was unable to find the waves he needed. Winchester commented: “Every heat I was getting a bit more confident. I just got into a bad rhythm in that final and I could not get out of it, so I got second. I’m pretty happy with that.”

With equal third place finishes, both Ben Player (AUS, NSW, Avalon) and Mark McCarthy (RSA, Richards Bay) walk away with 2400 points and $ 2500 each.

Player was in good form throughout the event, but was unable to match Winchester’s semi final performance. Player commented: “I could not buy a wave out there and Winny is an excellent competitor. In my eyes he is Top 5 in the world, so I’m happy losing to him.”

McCarthy was happy with his result, considering the conditions and risks involved during this event. “Tamega wanted it so bad, he is so hard to beat when its big and crazy like today. He deserved to win today.”
McCarthy’s performance has solidified his 3rd place on the GSS rankings, making him a title contender as the tour approaches the half-way mark at the Zicatela Pro in Puerto Escondido, Mexico from August 4-13.

Alan Munoz (CHI) stunned the bodyboarding world with his stellar performances and local wave knowledge. As a trialist, Munoz gained confidence with each heat, until running out of steam in Round 4. “I am happy to have competed at this level, but sad I did not make it further. I now am looking for a sponsor so I can go to the next event in Mexico.

Shaping – The EAST/WEST Collaboration

Funkshen founder/shaper Dave ‘Tully’ Tulloch is proud to announce his collaboration on the 2011/12 Funkshen Bodyboard range with fellow Australian master craftsman/shaper, Glen ‘Ed’ Edwards.

The project is titled “The EAST/WEST Collaboration”, referring to the location of each of the shapers, Tully being based in Perth, Western Australia, and Ed based on the Gold Coast on the East Coast of Australia. The two prominent shapers are highly experienced in producing high performance meticulously crafted custom bodyboards, and this knowledge will serve as the basis for the boards produced for the 2011/12 Funkshen stock range.

Glen Edwards is well known to both the Australian and Global bodyboarding scene through his own custom shaping label, Unknown Customs. As Australia’s longest serving shaper, having been shaping bodyboards for 19 years, Ed has acted as designer/advisor on many of the industry’s leading labels, and shaped customs for many of the world’s elite bodyboarders.

Tully commented on the collaboration:
“Ed and I have been both colleagues and competitive rivals for many years now. I think our collaboration on the new Funkshen board range can only benefit riders of Funkshen bodyboards. Having that competitive nature in the shaping bay pushes the overall progression and evolution of board design. With Ed in the East & me in the West it makes us a truly national brand with representation on both sides of Australia. We understand exactly what Australian riders are looking for and that is reflected in the 2011/12 Funkshen stock model range”.

Tully has also expanded the Funkshen team, with Shaun Pyne, Chris Wilson, Liam Tomkins, Joe Silver, joining Chris White.

Arica Chilean Challenge is ON

FRIDAY MAY 20 2011, ARICA CHILE: DAY ONE at the Arica Chilean Challenge is off to a cracking start with solid 2 mtr waves at the infamous powerful reef of El Gringo.
The first rounds of the trials saw some outstanding riding from the predominately Chilean contingent in front of a vocal local crowd.
Lucas Isnard (Brazil) and Danton Correa (Chile) were the two standouts of the day with consistent performances.
Joa Gabriel (Brazil) held the best two-wave combo (14.00) whilst the single highest score of the day belonged to Sebastian Siede (Chile) who blasted out of the gates in the first heat to post a solid 8 pointer for a deep tube to roll combo.
In the last heat of the day Kalani Latanzzi (Brazil) showed why he is one of the next big things coming out of South America with great wave selection and style.
The day included countless other highlights as El Gringo showed glimpses of brilliance by pumping out the occasional heaving slab that split in both directions. The forecast for the coming days looks promising with Sunday shaping up for the finish to the trails and a possible start for the main event.
By mid afternoon the “Brisa” or onshore breeze kicked in and organizers decided to postpone the last 4 heats of round 2 till tomorrow.
The town goes into celebratory mode tomorrow with a public holiday so an army of hardcore spectators is expected to roll up. The competitors are asked to check in at 7am for a 7.30 start.
The top 7 riders from these trials join the Top 23 riders in the world and two wildcards in the main event next week.
