DVD Review – AUSTRALIAN MADE

AUSTRALIAN MADE // David Child

Australian Made DVD cover The concept of this DVD is pretty cool: there are so many aussie DVDs nowadays but very few are 100% aussie focused and cover the whole oz coastline and riders. That DVD does this very well, the quality of the image is good, the filming is good too, there’s a lot of riders featured in it, including famous ones and rookies. The music matches the editing well and the overall feeling is that this video is clean and good. No very special or original but very cool. The DVD menu with the map of Oz is cool to.

This is a good vid for all Oz riders, and people wanting to travel to oz. So much potential!

DVD Review – VISIONS 2.5

VISIONS 2.5 // DVmedia

Vision 2.5 DVD cover This is the second “Visions” video. It’s called “Visions 2.5″ because “Visions 2″ was kinda called back from the shops for “legal” reasons… So this is “Visions 2″ but cleaned from any problematic footage and with a “0.5″ part which is more than a simple bonus, it’s almost a second little video after the video. Very cool.

“Visions 2.5″ is very good, i liked it better than “Visions 1″ , the footage is good, and there’s fucken great riders in it, starting with Spencer Skipper’s part, Jono’s part, Hardy’s and Novy’s parts. Those sections are great and it’s worth seeing the video just for them. There’s a cool helmet cam section too. The music is good and fits the video style well. The quality of the footage is good and even if some parts of the editing are still not 100% pro this video will motivate you like no other before you go surf. You gotta watch it. It’s not super “arty”, it’s more about great riders, style and skills in the water. You’ll get amped, i promess.

DVD Review – THE INSIDE

THE INSIDE // Scotty Carter

The Inside DVD cover The inside was filmed and released by Scotty Carter 10 years ago and he just re-released it on DVD. This is one of the best bbing movie ever, if not the best ever.

The Inside was the bench mark 10 years ago. Some of the footage might seem a little bit old to the younger guys but this is an awesome video that everyone needs to watch. Scotty was ahead of his time when he filmed and edited this. Great footage from all over the world are mixed with political and environnemental messages, flowless images, nutz skits and quotes. The soundtrack is really good, you never get sick of watching this. Chad Barba’s footage at the wedge, Roach footage in Mexico, Grodzen in Cali… it’s so good to watch this again on DVD !

Scotty also re-realeased ENOUGH SAID (older than the Inside).

DVD Review – The MITCH VID

The MITCH VID // Mitch Rawlins

The Mitch Vid DVD cover The highly anticipated Mitch DVD is out. It was distrubuted through RIPTIDE issue 155 in Oz. In the recent years Mitch became one of the most popular rider. His perfect style and ability to make big moves look easy, his orange and yellow boards, his churchill fins and crossed legs reverses… Well, now you can watch it over and over on DVD.

The DVD showcases all the latest sessions of Mitch and his friends, all around the world. There’s a few really good sessions and great footage and action. The editing and music are not fantastic but it’s ok though. The footage and filming angles are good. The highlight of the video is the shipstern section i reckon : do you often see a sponger get shacked like crazy on farken massive bombs and getting heaps of hoots from the rest of the Billabong elite team like parko and andy irons ? Mitch gets towed into a few slabs of the death at shippys and you dont wanna miss this !Go get your Riptide copies before it’s too late kids!

DVD Review – DOUBLE OR NOTHING

DOUBLE OR NOTHING // Stoked On Life Prod.

Double or Nothing DVD cover This is the new stoked on Life Prod. DVD. It’s one of the rare DVD coming out of California this year. It’s pretty good with nice footage from all around the world, the music is good too. The editing and the quality of the images ain’t super good but it’s alright. The spots and filming angles are different from all the other vids and it’s refreshing.

The best segment is the Roach one at the end. Fresh Roach footage. It’s short and the waves are small but it’s always good to watch Roach killing it in Cabo san Lucas. Let’s make it clear and simple : Roach owns it on the knee, has always owned it and will always. He’s the master, no questions asked. His intro a la « Bay Watch » style is hilarious. You gotta see this!

DVD Review – LEROY

LEROY // Waldron Brothers.

Leroy DVD cover After “DENIS” which was really good, here comes “LEROY”. Damn ! it’s just as good as “DENIS” ! The Waldron Bros are good, and they’ve helped raising the bar in bodyboarding DVD editing and filming. It’s perfectly edited, it’s perfectly filmed with perfect cameras on perfect locations, it’s perfect quality, it’s perfect music and it’s perfectly understandable that you’ll buy this piece of bodyboarding motion picture master-piece and enjoy it just as i did.

I only watched it twice before writing this so i dont remember everything i’ve seen. I do remember the Cook Islands section with all the rookies which is excellent and fun, the massive Tyge Richardson footage from that epic session in Oz with 20 feet waves and perfect barrels. I remember the Chile and Mex sections too, i remember the epic trip in Indo that made me froth like a 14 y.o. kid reading Playboy mag for the 1st time, and i remember thinking that we’re living a great time for bodyboarding: so many good riders, so many talents, so many guys motivated, so many new spots, (oh and so little money in the sport).

Anyway, “LEROY” is one of my favorite DVDs, if not THE one i prefer right now and i can’t wait 2007 to see what the Waldron Bros. will come up with.

DVD Review – TENSION 10

TENSION 10 // Chris White.

Tension 10 DVD cover Ah ! the long-awaited TENSION # 10 ! This is the last TENSION video but not the least. Do you know the definition of entertainment ? Ahhhh this is what TENSION 10 is all about. TENSION DVDs have a solid reputation and Mr White was not short of ideas for this last one. It’s got really good quality footage from the boys surfing the heaviest spots in Oz, Hawaii, Chile, etc.

It’s got never seen before footage of foil-bodyboarding. It’s got never seen before footage of night tow-at’s. (remember the MOVEMENT Mag balck and green cover with Rockdog launching a massive reverse air ? this is it, but with motion pictures…). It’s got never seen before footage of Ryan Hardy doing’ it’s Shakira thing ! Hilarious stuff. It’s goot good music choice and oh ! it’s got a nice Simpsons intro too.

Well it’s a DVD that needs to be watched more than once, believe me ! I hope Chris White and the boys are coming back next year with a new amazing project. We’ll miss the TENSION DVDs that’s for sure.

DVD Review – THE ROAD

THE ROAD // Digital Children.

The Road DVD cover This is not a bodyboarding DVD, this is an experience, a bodyboarding ‘voyage’, and a story. The Road retraces the amazing adventures of Michael Novy, Glen Thurston, Brendon Newton, Harry Dixon, Grizzla, Ryan Mattic and Adam Benwell during 6 months, all around the australia coast. Narrated mainly by Brendon Newton between each section, The Road is an endless suite of heart-stopping footage, heavy action and crazy kids attempting very few of us would attempt. A night on a boat in the middle of the ocean looking for a spot ? a 20 foot drop into a massive slab ? breaking a jet ski in the middle of nowhere ? getting stuck in the desert with an old 4WD and no gaz ? It’s all in there ! ah ah and it’s entertaining and fascinating. Much respect to the crew !

Footage-wise, the quality is unbelievable, the editing is really really good too, the titles are cool, the narration pretty good too, and the music choice is prefect and suits the DVD really well. Well done guys ! It’s one of the best DVDs this year.
